What Is an Agent?

There's a lot of noise right now about AI agents. Boards are asking about them. Vendors are pitching them. Your competitors may already be experimenting with them. But before you decide how to act, it's worth understanding what an agent actually is — and more importantly, what it does.

The Simplest Way to Think About It

An AI model answers questions. An AI agent does things.

That distinction sounds small. It isn't.

When you ask a model a question, it responds with text. You read it, you decide what to do with it, and then you go do it. You're still the one taking action.

An agent is different. An agent receives a goal, reasons through a plan, and then executes — calling tools, querying systems, making decisions, and moving work forward. The human stays in the loop at the level of oversight, not execution. That's a fundamentally different operating model.

AI Model

A brilliant advisor sitting across the table from you. It answers, explains, and recommends — but you're still the one who acts. Throughput is bounded by your own capacity to read, decide, and execute.

AI Agent

That same intelligence — except now it also has access to your systems, your data, and a to-do list it's actively working through. You set the goal. The agent closes the loop.

What Does “Doing Things” Actually Look Like?

In a regulated enterprise, agents can:

  • Ingest and analyze large volumes of documents, filings, or market data — not summarize them for you to read, but actually extract signals, flag anomalies, and route findings to the right people.
  • Monitor positions, compliance thresholds, or operational metrics continuously, and take pre-approved actions when conditions are met.
  • Draft, review, and route communications, reports, or internal workflows with minimal human touchpoints.
  • Coordinate across systems — pulling from one data source, enriching from another, writing results to a third — without a human orchestrating each step.

Why Regulated Industries Have to Think About This Differently
